Thank you to all the Kiwanians that enriched my Kiwanian experiences during the month of October! You educated me as we travelled the Kiwanis Road of Education.
Allen and I met and interacted with many Kiwanians as we learned about your divisions, clubs and YOU! We’re shooting for the stars as you strive to serve your communities AND CHILDREN.
You’ve recognized clubs and individuals for their efforts in designing and implementing quality programs to benefit our children. We met people who are working to establish working relationships with their Service Leadership Clubs. We recognize those clubs that include Aktion Clubs as part of their Division and Club Recognition efforts.
I am excited when I listen to your ideas for the future. Looking ahead and thinking outside the box are crucial to our Illinois-Eastern Iowa’s success and we move ahead!
Move forward! Don’t lose that excitement! I look forward to a most memorable NOVEMBER!
Yours in Kiwanis Service, Mary Zeronas, Governor, 2025-2026 Illinois – Eastern Iowa District
About Kiwanis
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world, one child and one community at a time. Kiwanians are volunteers changing the world through service to children and communities. Kiwanis members help shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, mentor the disadvantaged, and care for the sick. They develop youth as leaders, build playgrounds, raise funds for pediatric research, and much more. No problem is too big or too small. Why? Because working together, members achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone. When you give a child a chance to learn, experience, dream, and succeed, great things happen!
The I-I District consists of all K-Family clubs located in the State of Illinois as well as those in the following counties of Iowa: Allamakee, Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque, Jones, Jackson, Clinton, Muscatine, Scott, Louisa, Henry, Des Moines & Lee.
The members of the I-I District are very proud of our midwestern heritage and our long standing Kiwanis service in our communities. Having chartered on September 27, 1920, the I-I District K-Family has provided service to children for over 100 years!
The term “Kiwanis” comes from a native term closely resembling, “we build.” Our district volunteers with communities in Illinois and Eastern Iowa. We acknowledge our service occurs on the ancestral lands of the Osage, Myaamia, Sauk & Fox, Kaskaskia, Kickapoo and Peoria peoples. As we give back with our hands and hearts, let us honor the original stewards of these ancestral grounds, the living land that we collectively gather upon, and acknowledge the strength of all indigenous peoples.

Division 12 leaders met on October 15 at Mr. C’s in Rockford to brief each other on a variety of ongoing activities within the Division.
Diana Saavedra of Machesney/Loves Parks explained how the club discussed Youth Protection at its first meeting and how she is assessing community needs to determine where their best fit might be for a signature project. One possibility is partnering with Sleep In Heavenly Peace and Lowes for making beds for children.
Roxanne Vanderheyden of Alpine reported on their (1) continued support of the local food pantry, (2) setting a goal of collecting and distributing 5,000 books for children up to 5th grade and (3) also collecting and distributing winter wear for needy children.
Steve Johnson of Lincoln-Douglas reported on their efforts of collecting good Holloween foods for children rather than candy for the food pantry and their goal to create 2 new Key Clubs this year
Lori Berkes-Nelson of Rockford described their efforts in (1) setting a goal of recruiting 12 new members starting with a social, (2) continuing its support of the local food bank, (3) collecting donations for socks and underwear for school children, (4) selling mums each year as a major fund raiser, and (5) giving members the opportunity to develop their speaking and leadership skills by allowing individuals to invite guest speakers and chair the club’s monthly meetings. ...
